Radio Intereconomia recently interviewed Ernesto Gonzalez, the Director of FIDAMC, a leading manufacturer of composite materials. FIDAMC is actively involved in the HERWINGT project, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
During the interview, Ernesto provided an overview of the HERWINGT project's goals and FIDAMC's contributions. He highlighted the various types of composite materials that FIDAMC is developing, emphasizing their state-of-the-art origins. Ernesto stressed that composite materials represent the present and future of aviation, not only for weight reduction but also for their integral role in aircraft systems. He described these materials as "intelligent," noting that our growing understanding of them will enhance maintenance inspections and processes.
The interview offered a glimpse into the daily operations at FIDAMC's facilities, which Ernesto described as "passionate." He acknowledged the challenges posed by new technological demands and emphasized that FIDAMC is well-equipped to meet these challenges, thanks to its advanced laboratories, manufacturing, and testing capabilities.
Ernesto also discussed FIDAMC's continuous development efforts, which extend beyond the aerospace industry to sectors such as railway, naval, and energy. He announced the upcoming inauguration of a new 3D printing factory in Cadiz, adding to FIDAMC's existing facilities in Getafe, Illescas, and Brussels.
Reflecting on FIDAMC's origins, Ernesto explained that the company was founded in 2006 through an agreement between Airbus, CDTI, and the Madrid community, with the goal of maintaining leadership in composite materials. Since then, FIDAMC has strived to uphold its advantageous position in the field.
Ernesto expressed pride in FIDAMC's participation in the HERWINGT project, underscoring the importance of their role in developing technologies and materials for future aviation. He described HERWINGT as an exciting project that will enable the creation of the best commercial aircraft in the coming years.
Looking ahead, Ernesto identified key challenges in global aviation, including the increasing demand for aircraft production and the need for innovation in manufacturing processes through robotization and automation. He also highlighted the urgent need to address de-carbonization and the potential future use of hydrogen as a fuel source, emphasizing that work must begin now to make this feasible.
Finally, Ernesto shared his vision for FIDAMC's growth, predicting an 80% increase in the company's size over the next five years. He emphasized the importance of expanding their international presence and supporting key aeronautical opportunities that will emerge over the next two decades.
